The winners of the inaugural UDN Design Award were unveiled Feb. 3 in Taipei City, highlighting the vibrancy of the local cultural and creative sector.

Assessed on the basis of such criteria as aesthetics, creativity and functionality, the 28 pieces were selected from 252 submissions across the categories of concept, finished products and online popularity.

“Taiwan designers possess enormous potential and are producing excellent works with everyday applications,” said Apollo Sun, general manager of United Daily News Group’s Cultural and Creative Business unit. “It is important to encourage these talents to achieve at the highest level.”

Top prize in the concept section went to a duo from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology for One Sheet cosmetics. This product offers modern consumers the convenience of using cosmetics once before disposal.

The silver and bronze prizes were picked up by DFS and the pair Huang Shao-yu and Liao Wan-ting, respectively. The former’s Flexible Ware is a bamboo-inspired container set comprising a candleholder, flower vase, fruit plate and lamp, while the latter’s Unbreakable is an innovative tea set suited for Chinese style services.

Best submission in the finished product category went to Dydash International Co. Ltd. for Zeze Bag. The item can be easily converted from a tote to a backpack without sacrificing aesthetics.

The silver prize winner is Mobicrea Innovation Furniture for its workstation Fillet, which boasts curved corners and a sleek style. Bronze went to Think Product Co. Ltd. for Dipper, a colorful barbeque and pastry brush made of silicone.

Online popularity honors are claimed by Zeze Bag, while bicycle Hybrid by Ling Shih Design Studio and mosquito light PR-23 by Portoti Inc. took second and third place, respectively. These pieces were lauded for espousing top-notch functions and enhancing quality of life.

The winning works will be recognized at a ceremony March 14 at the Taipei New Horizon building in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park. Awarded designers are to share a cash prize of NT$1 million (US$32,159), with their pieces featured at an exhibition starting the same day and wrapping up March 29 in the park. (DF-JSM)
